The halogen light bulb or lamp is a type of incandescent lamp that uses halogen gas to increase the bulb’s light output. Halogen lights are known for moderately high efficiency, quality of light, and high rated life compared to other incandescent lamps.
In 1882 the use of chlorine to prevent the blackening of halogen lamps was patented. In 1959, General Electric patented a halogen light that uses iodine as the halogen gas for commercial use.
HOW HALOGEN LIGHTS WORK
A halogen light works similarly to an incandescent bulb but has a halogen cycle. In a typical incandescent lamp, tungsten slowly evaporates from the burning filament and causes the blackening of the bulb, which decreases light output and reduces life.
Halogen lights can avoid this problem because the chemical reaction between the halogen gas and the evaporated tungsten prevents the latter from sticking to the glass. As some tungsten is returned to the filament, the halogen cycle also increases the bulb’s rated life. Because the temperature required for this reaction is higher than a typical incandescent bulb, halogen lights are generally manufactured from quartz.
USES OF HALOGEN LIGHTS
Halogen lights are used in various commercial and residential applications. Halogen lights are used in the headlamps of cars, for under-cabinet lighting in kitchens, and work lights. In addition, halogen reflectors are often preferred for directed lighting, such as spotlights and floodlights. They are also increasingly being used as a more efficient alternative to incandescent reflectors.
ADVANTAGES OF HALOGEN LIGHTS
The gas contained within the halogen light is at a higher pressure, making the bulb smaller than a standard incandescent bulb.
Halogen lights are small, lightweight, and easy to produce.
A halogen light can last over 150% longer than standard incandescent lights.
DISADVANTAGES OF HALOGEN LIGHTS
Halogen lights can become extremely hot and pose a burn risk.
Due to high pressure, halogen lights may explode, sending glass shards outward.
